Welcome to Golate.
Principal and owner Hywel Samuel qualified from Cardiff Dental School in 1978.The original St Mary St Practice, located in Cardiff City Centre was established over 40 years ago. Hywel has been involved in the vocational training programme as a VT trainer for over 20 years ensuring ethical and professional treatment at all times.
Golate Dental was established in 2020 and serves NHS and Private patients in state-of-the-art surroundings. Hywel divides his time between Golate and his Loudon Square Practice which he opened in 2013. A fluent Welsh speaker Hywel is a huge sports fan especially rugby!
BDS 2011 (Wales) – GDC 210338
Rachel graduated from Cardiff University in 2011. She started working with Hywel Samuel & Associate from 2014. Rachel enjoys all aspects of dentistry and tries to make patients feel at ease. Rachel has a special interest in cosmetic dentistry and has completed the Smilefast course, which enables her to give patients an instant composite smile makeover. Rachel is also starting her diploma in Restorative and Aesthetic dentistry to further expand her skills in dentistry.
In her spare time, she enjoys mountain biking, swimming, and travelling.
BDS (Wales) 2014 – GDC 251394
Leah qualified from Cardiff Dental School in 2014 and joined the practice in 2016.
Leah previously worked in the restorative department at the Heath Hospital where she gained experience in complex dental treatments. She has also worked with the community dental service gaining experience in treating children and vulnerable patients.
Leah is a fluent Welsh speaker originally from West Wales.
In her spare time, she enjoys baking, going to the gym and travelling.
BDS 2014 (Bristol) – GDC 251681
Emily graduated with a distinction from the University of Bristol in 2014. After graduating, she moved back home to Cardiff and joined Hywel Samuel and Associates.
Emily enjoys providing minimally invasive cosmetic dentistry for patients, mainly composite bonding to enhance a patient’s natural smile. Emily will shortly be completing a course in London to provide patients with Smile Fast composite veneers.
She is also trained in facial aesthetic treatments and provides anti-wrinkle injections and PCA skin chemical peels. PCA skin peels are intended to reduce signs of acne, hyperpigmentation, and aging by exfoliating dead skin cells and revealing a new layer of skin underneath.
Outside of work, Emily enjoys running. She completed the virtual London marathon in October 2020 and currently training for London 2021 marathon whilst raising money for the mental health charity MIND.
BDS 2019 (Manchester) – GDC 283569
Sioned qualified from Manchester Dental School in 2019.
Sioned enjoys all aspects of dentistry and aims to deliver high quality patient focused care. Sioned has a special interest in cosmetic dentistry and is certified in providing Invisalign braces. She has also attended Dr Monik’s Totally Cosmetic course in composite bonding. Sioned is also undertaking a postgraduate diploma in Restorative and Aesthetic dentistry to further expand her knowledge and skills.
In her spare time, she enjoys socialising with friends, travelling and spending time with her family.
Sioned is also a fluent Welsh speaker.
BDS (Sheffield) 2020 – GDC 289947
Rhiannon qualified from the University of Sheffield in 2020 and joined the practice in 2022.
Rhiannon enjoys working to deliver high quality dentistry with a strong patient focus and her approachable style.
She provides a range of general and cosmetic treatments in both English and Welsh. Outside of work, Rhiannon enjoys spending time with her boyfriend and family – particularly her chocolate Labrador, Bella!
She also enjoys horse riding and travelling, having spent a summer volunteering as a dentist in Vietnam and Thailand.
BDS, MFDS, RCS, MSc (Dental Implantology GDC: 191823)
After qualifying from the University of Bristol in 2010, I completed further postgraduate training, first joining the Royal College of Surgeons in 2012, then obtaining a Masters degree in Dental Implantology in 2016. I regularly attend implant-related courses to learn new advanced techniques, and I now commit a large amount of my clinical time solely for dental implant treatment.
I have always believed that it is a great privilege to be able to help patients with their problems. It’s why, throughout my career, I have been so passionate about dental implants. I genuinely believe that dental implants can replace missing teeth to enhance a person’s quality of life: their self-confidence, their smile, their ability to chew and speak in comfort. At the core of my treatment philosophy is the belief that my patients deserve high quality care that should be delivered in a kind and gentle manner.
In my personal life I enjoy spending time and travelling with my wife and 2 boys. When time allows, I enjoy playing cricket and other outdoor sports, as well as training for my brown belt in Jujitsu.
BDS (LIVERPOOL) 2022 (Hons) – GDC 302436
I was born and raised in Brecon and am a Welsh speaker.
After studying dentistry at the University of Liverpool I graduated in 2022 and decided to move back to Wales. I have enjoyed working at the Hywel Samuel practice ever since, broadening my skills in all aspects of dentistry.
I enjoy learning and aim to achieve the best care for my patients.
Outside of dentistry I enjoy playing football and golf.

Asseel Al-Najjim, BDS Mosul, Iraq 1995, worked as an oral surgeon in many countries before coming to the UK and working as a Speciality Doctor in many Oral and Maxillofacial surgery departments in South Wales and England.
Asseel started working in practice in 2019 and is especially interested in treating anxious patients, both adults and children which can be very challenging at times. Asseel also has an interest in incorporating sedation in her practice as part of her strategy to make dentistry a more pleasant experience for patients during their journey.
Asseel completed a Certificate in Implantology Warwick University, 2014, Tipton Training, Manchester 2022 and is working towards gaining a Diploma in Restorative dentistry and a MSc in implantology.
Asseel can also provide other treatments such as Teoxane Fillers and Botox® when clinically indicated, provide anti snoring devices for people suffering from snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea, Composite bonding, Clear Correct Aligners and provide counselling for patients who suffer from parafunction and Myofacial pain dysfunction syndrome which causes chronic headaches due to stress and can be treated with splints and Botox®.
Asseel enjoys long walks and travelling in her spare time.

Joanna qualified from the University of Bristol in 2019.
Before joining the practice in 2023, she worked in West Wales, London and teaching dental students at Cardiff University. During the COVID19 pandemic she volunteered to work within a critical care unit and in 2024 volunteered with the World Health Dental Organisation to provide urgent dental treatment in rural Kenya, subsequently writing for the British Dental Journal and Dental Update.
Joanna is currently undertaking a PGCert in Advanced Endodontics in London to continue providing a high standard of root canal treatment to patients.
In her spare time, she enjoys writing and attending a local choir. She is originally from Carmarthen and speaks both English and Swedish.
